Bernice Catherine Kaplan (nee Sontheimer) was born on August 8, 1934 and spent her all of her growing up years in Washington Heights, NY. She met her husband, Arnold Kaplan, at the age
of 16 and married at 19. They had 3 children, Steve, Larry (Sarita) and Amy (Rich), 6 grandchildren, Ben, Stan, Marc (DeeVa), Hannah (Stephen), Claire (Brian) and Rose and 3 great
grandchildren, Mason, Colin and Kelsey.
Throughout her life, she faced many obstacles, including her husband’s brain tumors, her son’s death, and her own bouts with cancer at age 50, and the most recent at 84. However, with
each obstacle she was able to not only overcome but made a tremendous impact and inspired those around her. After her husband died in 2000, she formed a singles group that provided
many opportunities for widows and single women to form friendships, travel together, and get the most out of life. She loved being a mom, grandmother and great grandmother and got
great joy in watching them grow. She was an active member of her synagogue, Olam Tikvah and it was there she formed many lifelong friends. She made friends easily and always had a way of helping others see the bright side. She was a friend, a mother, and a confidant to so many. She will be greatly missed.
