Front Royal, VA – Betty “Jessie Elizabeth” Perdue, age 89, passed away on March 20, 2024, in Front Royal, VA. Born on May 21, 1934, in Alexandria, VA, to the late Charles and Jessie Reiss, Betty, also known as “Mom/Grandma/Great Grandma Betty,” was a loving and remarkable individual.

She attended the local Alexandria schools for Elementary and Middle school and ultimately graduated from GW High school in 1951—one of her classmates was the famed Willard Scott.

Betty was a dedicated crocheter, creating cherished heirlooms for her family. She enjoyed solving puzzles and crosswords in her free time. Betty’s love for animals extended to her adored dogs, whom she cherished dearly. She was a devoted family woman, finding joy in receiving hand-drawn pictures from her great-grandchildren. She loved all animals. Especially the birds and squirrels that would visit her backyard. She enjoyed church services, both in person and on TV. Betty enjoyed being around all of her family and sharing great stories and laughs.

In her professional life, Betty’s passion for education led her to a career in administration for the IDA- Institute of Defense Analysis and NEA- National Education Association. Despite facing challenges such as eyesight loss and other ailments, Betty remained resilient, showcasing her strength and determination.

Betty is survived by her loving son, Richard L Carlson Sr., her grandchildren Richard L Carlson Jr, David P Carlson, Nathan J Carlson, and Nikki Jessup, as well as her 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Perdue, and her son, Ronald L Ervin. Great grandchildren include Rhys J Carlson, Devyn T Carlson, Raelynn E Carlson, Paul R Carlson, EmmaLynn R Carlson,
Alyssa Jessup, Haley Jessup and Aidan Jessup.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 6 pm to 8 pm at Cunningham Turch, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA. 22314. The burial will take place on Thursday, April 4, at 1 pm at Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria, VA.

Contributions can be made to any animal shelter in honor of Betty’s love for animals. The family invites all who knew and loved Betty to join them in honoring her memory at the upcoming services.
