Carla Thompson

Carla Eva Thompson was born in 1948 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and passed away on August 29 th , 2024, at Sibley Memorial Hospital, where she was Hospice Chaplain for Capital Caring Health. Carla’s spirit was strong and sacred, and her willingness to sit and be with those who sought her out was a blessing. She was a listener. As an Episcopal priest for over 20 years, she moved gracefully among the joyful celebrations lifting up the Holy Spirit, and the solemn liturgies that people sought for solace and reprieve from the sorrows of their lives. She was an adept preacher, a gifted teacher, a patient presence, and a righteous voice for the sick and suffering. There was no better advocate than Carla.

This obituary would be remiss if Carla’s sense of humor were not noted. She was always available for hearty laughter and light-hearted banter. She loved to do both. Her love of dogs, her discerning and serious taste in bourbon, and her Scandinavian roots were all defining features of her public persona. And, of course, the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs!  Her encyclopedic knowledge of sports was often astonishing. She never met a sport she didn’t love.

The Spirit was always beckoning Carla into prayer and into reverence for everything that she understood intuitively God has blessed us with. Quiet and inner-contemplation and prayer beads were measures of her spiritual life .We will commend Carla’s spirit to the great cloud of witnesses at a small family service in New York and ask that any donations you may want to make in Carla’s name should go to: Capital Caring Health, Volunteer Services.
