Clayton Lewis Mack

Clayton Lewis Mack entered eternal rest Friday, August 7, 2020. As the fifth of seven children birthed from the blessed matrimonial union of the late Oscar B. and Juanita L. Mack, Clayton was born August 5, 1959 at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas.

Clayton was educated in the Galveston ISD School System. During high school, he participated in basketball, dressed well at all times but his passion was the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). Clayton took seriously his charge in ceremonies, assignments, and especially competitions.

After graduating from Ball High School, Clayton followed in the military footsteps of his father, older brothers, and uncles when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His military tenure spanned 1977 to 1986. His service to his country led him to various states as well as numerous countries overseas. Clayton’s sense of service and dedication afforded him various awards and accommodations. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant.

Life after the military led Clayton to gainful employment in Accounting for almost 30 years with the Department of Defense. Anyone who truly knew him knew Clayton had a head for figures.

Clayton accepted Christ as a child at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Galveston, Texas. As he turned a new and different page in his life’s journey, Clayton revived his relationship with God. He united with the Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia under the biblical leadership of the Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley. He faithfully served in ministries he whole-hearted loved with energy, enthusiasm, and effort. Clayton worked tirelessly as a member of the Prison Ministry, the Food Closet (Pantry) Ministry, the Men’s Bible Study Group as well as helped complete numerous mission projects. His witness and work not only transformed his life; it positively changed the walk of others.

Clayton leaves to celebrate and cherish his memories his faithful wife, Angela. Clayton and Angela were married almost nineteen (19) years. They both enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends as well as hosting in their home. Memories of the Daddy-Daughter bond are shared by his two beautiful and adoring daughters, Angelika Mack and Chantel Mack, both of Raleigh-Durham,
North Carolina. His crown of fatherhood was made complete when he was dubbed “Grandpop” by his beloved grandchildren: Myshaun, Jr., Echo, Enoch, and Amirah. He also leaves six (6) siblings with memories that invoke the sounds of his contagious laugh: Oscar B. Mack, Jr. (Eliza) of Angleton, Texas; Cheryl Mack Smiley (Larry) of Galveston, Texas; Anthony L. Mack (Jeannette) of Texas City, Texas; Kenneth E. Mack (Annette) of Bastrop, Texas; Patricia Mack Batiste (Kenneth) of Houston, Texas; and Michael W. Mack (Pamela) of Bastrop, Texas. Clayton’s circle of memories would not be complete without sister-in-law Tanya Green of Mobile Alabama, brother-in-law Charles Green (Betty) of Mobile, Alabama, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and special friend, Mrs. Cythina Whitmore.

A visitation will be held Thursday, August 20, 2020 from 10:00 to 11:00 at the Cunningham Turch Funeral Home located at 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, Virginia. A private Home-Going Celebration will be held at the Alfred Street Baptist Church located at 301 S Alfred Street, Alexandria, Virginia. The Rev. Marcia Norfleet will be the officiant.

Love Poem

I wrote your name in the sand,
But the waves washed it away.

I wrote your name in the sky
But the wind blew it away.

So I wrote your name in my heart,
And that’s where it will stay…always!
