Daniel Patrick Berney 1964-2018
Daniel Patrick Berney, passed away June 26, 2018 of complications from pneumonia, in Washington DC.
Predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Neil and Agnes Berney and his maternal grandparents Michael and Helen Blake. He is survived by his parents Peter and Betty Berney, siblings, Timothy Michael Berney (Becky), Kathleen Berney Beckman(Steve), and Kevin Gerald Berney (Miranda), and his girlfriend and best friend, Melinda Tomaino. Dan also leaves beloved nieces Jesse, Erin, Elyssa and nephews Steven, Sean, Ryan and Liam. Dan will be missed by many other relatives and friends and his beloved rescue pup Tulsa.
Dan was born in Darien, Connecticut on December 12, 1964. He spent his childhood years in Waterloo, Belgium where he attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Belgian School through 3rd grade. Dan completed his primary/upper schooling in Lake Oswego, Oregon and in Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin in 1987 with a degree in History. Dan’s work life started as a bank examiner with the Department of the Treasury and evolved into challenging assignments setting up banking systems in recovering war torn regions around the world; Bosnia, Afghanistan, and South Sudan to name a few. He always loved coming home for breaks to decompress and spend time with his family. In 2006 Dan returned to the DC area for good and set down roots. Dan was a fixture in the Capitol Hill Community and was one of the bar manager’s at the neighborhood American Legion Post 8.
Dan had an amazing sense of humor which always lightened our hearts. He will be remembered as a generous, honorable man, fiercely loyal to family and friends.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church Tuesday, July 3 at 10:30 a.m., 8710 Mount Vernon Hwy, Alexandria, VA · (703) 780-4055.
