Dolores Ann Rice, 75, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 11, 2023, at home with loved ones in Alexandria, VA. The day before, she and her loving husband John enjoyed their 53rd wedding anniversary together, perusing photo albums of their wedding and travels. Known for her selflessness, grace, and good humor, she was an attentive listener and generous audience to all who were fortunate to know her.
The third of five children along with her twin brother Don, Dolores was born on June 24, 1948, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She and recent West Point graduate John fell in love during a blind date arranged by his sister Barbara, were married in July of 1970 and embarked on their military tour of duty.
Their first stop was California, where she gave birth to her son Chris and daughter Jennifer, and then a long journey including stations in Tehran, New York, and Virginia. Devoted to family, John and Lori made the long drive home to Detroit once a year when possible to see their parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews.
While in Herndon, John retired and started a civilian career, they bought a house in a brand new subdivision, and Dolores started working. Although her new job in legal support and contracts for a software startup diverged far from her sociology degree, her attentive and dedicated nature allowed her to quickly become a valued employee, earning employee of the year awards and free cruises. During the dot-com bubble, Dolores enjoyed an exciting few months as a multimillionaire on paper after her company became the fourth largest IPO to-date. True to her nature, Dolores promptly divided her shares and gifted them to her family so that they could share in the excitement. As expected, the stock price fell back to earth, but a good time was had by all.
Outside of work, Dolores loved painting and created several pieces that are still cherished by the family. She became active in investing and managing the rental of the family’s vintage home in Los Angeles. Later on, Dolores’ caring nature led her to serve as a caretaker for her parents through their old age, and then again for her husband John as he encountered long-term medical issues.
Dolores is survived by her husband John, son Chris, daughter Jennifer, brother Don, and sister Wendy. She is preceded in death by her parents Doug and Dorothy, brother Gary, and sister Marilyn. We miss her very much, but are happy she is at peace. She was always an angel, so they know she is fitting in just fine.
