Jason Morton passed peacefully on August 15, 2022, at home following complications due to cancer. He was 44 years young living with his loving family in Alexandria, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Nora, and child, Alvietta, parents Mack and Marcy Morton, siblings Adam, Samuel, and Molly, grandfather Robert, parents in-law Ross and Dianna Patterson, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He is also survived by many extended relatives on both sides of the family.
Jason was a Senior Policy Analyst at the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom focused on countries of the Former Soviet Union. Prior to joining USCIRF, he was a Visiting Professor in Russian, Soviet, and East European History at UC Berkeley.
Jason earned a Ph.D. in History and a B.A. in History and Slavic Languages and Literatures from UC Berkeley. He was the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the Fulbright Student Award, and the UC Berkely Regents and Chancellor’s Fellowship.
He was an avid reader, talented musician, and readily accepted opportunities to explore the countryside near and far. He loved bonding over good food, happy hour drinks, and wide range of conversations. He was an amazing, humorous, loving person; generous with his time, kept us laughing in tears with quick wit, and provided endless entertainment with his guitar. Travel was a special element of his family’s life, gaining countless friends and a lifetime of memories. Jason will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him and forever remembered.
To honor Jason’s memory, we are holding a celebration of life service on September 15 at 2:00 PM, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, Virginia. Leave your sadness at the door, but bring rather your stories, your laughs, and your happiness over a life that was lived to the fullest.
