MARGUERITE JOAN SHAY SCHEFFEY
Margot died peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer’s on February 9, 2023, at The View of Alexandria Nursing home in Alexandria, VA. She is survived by her daughters Jennifer Shay of Coos Bay OR and Melinda Cheselka (Steven) of Apopka FL, stepsons Carl Scheffey (Susan) and John Scheffey (Betsy). She will be missed by many other relatives across the US, England and Australia, including her nieces, nephews and God children, as well as her longtime caregiver Ama Serwah. She was preceded in death by her 1st husband Jerome W Shay who died in 1990 and her 2nd husband Charles Scheffey who died in 2014.
Margot was born in India on September 14, 1925, when she was 4 her family moved back to England and to her beloved family home ‘Persfield’ in Ewell. During WW2 she met her first husband Jerome and moved to the United States. Margot worked in the banking industry as an Executive Administrative Assistant for First American Bank. She loved singing in the church choir and was an active member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church participating on various committees. Margot loved crafting particularly for the church bazaar and had a passion for her dogs Emma and Lula. It was due to this love of dogs that she met her 2nd husband Chuck and his dog Harriett.
A memorial service will be held on February 27, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1132 North Ivanhoe St, Arlington, VA 22205. Interment will immediately follow the service, on the Church grounds.
