Mary Louise Layman Redd

With great sadness, Mary Louise Layman Redd of Alexandria, Virginia passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, February 17, 2025 at Mount Vernon Hospital. She was 96 years old.

Born and raised in Frostburg, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late James and Carrie (Smouse) Layman. Mary had four brothers, Joseph, James, Robert, Dale Layman and one sister Phyllis Layman (Minnick). Mary had treasured memories of loving grandparents.

Mary L. Redd was the beloved wife for 65 years to John Hawkins Redd and the loving mother to three children Barbara (Otto) Dove, Elizabeth (Gerald) Santulli, John (Mary Renee) Redd.

Mary will be missed by five grandchildren, Katherine Barrack (Frank), Eric Dove, Bronwyn, Ceara, and Shane Redd. She also has two great grandsons Frank Owen and Paul Gabriel (Barrack).

Mary graduated from Kings Daughters Hospital as a Registered Nurse in Martinsburg, West Virginia in 1953. She worked at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Maryland until her marriage. Later, Mary worked as an independent real estate agent managing various properties.

Mary lived in Alexandria, Virginia for over 65 years. She was a devoted and wonderful mother who had strong faith, with strong will, and determination. She enjoyed giving love and support to family and community. Hobbies and interests included music, exercise, gardening, and current events.

Private family Catholic mass services will be held and her final resting place will be with her late husband John, at National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico in Virginia.
