On Thursday, January 14, 2021, Michael John Spindler of Alexandria, Virginia, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 67.

Michael John was born on June 21, 1953 in Washington, D.C. to the late Jack and Mary Ann (Brown) Spindler. Mike, as he preferred to be called (Not Mr. Spindler. “That was my father.” he’d say.) or Mikey John, as called by his beloved mother, was a proud 5th generation Washingtonian (and Senators’ fan) where he spent his childhood. Mike is also survived by his eldest brother Steve and younger siblings, Kathy, Ellen, Lowry, Ginny and Jerry. As a teenager, Mike and his family moved to Southern Maryland where he would soon meet the love of his life, Marilynn Moody. The two were inseparable since that first date when Mike borrowed his father’s car to treat Marilynn to McDonald’s french fries in Clinton, MD, 52 years ago.

Mike’s greatest motivation in life was his wife Marilynn of nearly 47 years, his three daughters, Nicole, Cristine and Brooke, and his six grandchildren, Chloe, Gabrielle, Nola, Lucien, Desmond and Duke. Everything Mike did was for his family, and his most fervent wish was for them to be happy.

Mike was a voracious reader with a passion for American history, current events and the dictionary. Marilynn thoroughly enjoyed finding new words to try and stump him with but without fail, Mike knew the definition. He had an amazingly precise memory and could recite minute details about his Irish and English ancestors dating back to the 1200’s thanks to years of devoted genealogy research. Washington sports was another of Mike’s passions. He literally had tears in his eyes when major league baseball returned to the District and again when he was able to attend Game 5 the year his Nationals won the World Series championship in 2019. Mike also loved the ocean and blue crabs with a passion, but most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Mike had a special gift of making everyone feel special and loved with his infectious smile and, for many, a personalized nickname, as his mother before him did. He would go out of his way to help anyone and would not be able to rest until their problem was solved to the best of his ability. His assistance was always accompanied by his quick yet quiet wit to, no doubt, make the person feel more at ease. He genuinely cared about his community, his country, the earth and future generations. Mike exemplified honor, loyalty, sacrifice, conscientiousness and selflessness. He dedicated 40 years of his life as an electrician at the Chalk Point Generating Station in Aquasco, MD where he made lifelong friendships.

A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2021 at Mike’s childhood parish, the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle located at 1725 Rhode Island Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20036.

Mike would want us to remain vigilant about staying safe. Please honor him by taking care of yourselves and each other by exercising the COVID-19 precautions as recommended by the CDC. That goes for always, not just before attending his service. The service will be recorded for live streaming and/or later viewing. Masks and 6-foot social distancing are required. The Cathedral is limited to 25% capacity or up to 200 people which offers ample opportunity for distancing. The family is delighted to be able to host a Proper Mass in Mike’s honor during these difficult times but will need to reserve hugs and close contact for a later date when it is safe to do so. They will surely be needed for years to come.
