Paul Hampton Lackey, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 12, at his home in Arlington, VA surrounded by family.He is survived by his wife of 52 years Sandra Diehl Lackey and two sons David Lackey and wife Leah of McLean, VA and Tim Lackey and wife Michelle of Fairfax, VA. He also leaves behind sister Margaret Stunkle of Ranson, WV and grandchildren Taylor, Tara, Aleksei, Nikolas, Dominic and Carmen.Born in Upperville, Virginia in 1924, Paul grew up on a farm in Loudon County. He spent much of his childhood working on the farm and hunting and trapping. In 1942, he joined the Navy at age 17 serving in the Atlantic, Pacific and European theaters during World War II. Upon discharge from the Navy, Paul attended Barber school and served as aBarber for 25 years before joining the Capitol Police in 1972 where he worked until retiring in 1989.Paul discovered later in life that he had extraordinary talent as a distance runner. He completed many Marathons over the last 40 years often winning the races in his age bracket. His other hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening.The family will receive friends from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron St. Alexandria, VA 22314. Internment will be held 12pm, Friday, April 21, 2017 at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Paul’s name to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society www.nmcrs.org or theMacula Vision Research Foundation www.mvrf.org .
