Robert C. Moran of West Springfield, VA died Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Capital Hospice Halquist House in North Arlington of complications from lung cancer.Born Sept. 12, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of William and Muriel Guinn Moran. He lived his entire adult life in the Washington, DC area. In June 1948 while serving in the U.S. Army Air Forces in Europe, he worked as a cargo specialist participating in the Berlin Airlift.On July 14, 1952 in Alexandria, VA, he married the former Lois Goodwin who survives. To this union were born four children: Robert of Fall Church, Ricky of Manassas, Stacy of Alexandria and Ralph, who preceded him in death. In addition, he is also survived by his brother-in-law, Robert Goodwin of Texas Mr. Moran worked for the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad as a car inspector at Potomac Yards in Alexandria. He retired in 1992 after 40 years of service. He worked for the Alexandria School Board for 26 years from 1967 to 1993 as a school bus driver, driving students to athletic events all over the state of Virginia. He worked as a greeter at the Mount Vernon Estate from 1992 to 2007. In 1993, he joined the Alexandria Police Dept. as a crossing guard. He worked at his post at the Polk Elementary School in Alexandria for 17 years where he became know affectionately as “Mr. Bob” by all the children in his care. There will be a visitation and celebration of Robert’s life on Monday, March 28, 2011 at Cunningham Funeral Home, 811 Cameron St. Alexandria, VA. at 2-4 & 6-8 PM. The funeral will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 1PM. Robert loved flowers and gifts of flowers are gratefully appreciated. Memorials can be made to the Capital Hospice. Arrangements are under the directions of Cunningham Funeral Home, Alexandria, VA. Interment will be at Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria.
