Teresa Sherman (nee O’Dea) “Terry”, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and dear friend to many, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2022, at the age of 93 in Richmond, Virginia.
Terry is survived by her children, James, Michael, Glenn, and Brian; daughters-in-law, Monica, Sherri, and Karen; and sister, Cecilia O’Sullivan. She is predeceased by her husband, Duane, son David, daughter-in-law, Linda, sisters, Mary O’Dea, Anna Toomey, Frances Rowland, and brother, Seamus O’Dea.
Terry was born on January 23, 1929, in Kilkee, County Clare, Ireland to James and Mary Ann O’Dea. Her father and mother owned a local public house, with the family residing in a five-bedroom dwelling above the pub. As both parents worked in the pub, they employed a nanny to help care for the children.
At the age of 18, Terry moved to London, where she met the love of her life, Duane, at a local dance. In 1954, Terry and Duane were married in Germany, and soon after moved to Virginia and started a family, ultimately having five boys — within a six-year span! Terry worked for, and retired from, Pan American Health Organization in Washington, D.C.
Family meant a lot to Terry, and she was blessed to have eight grandchildren: Jamie Zloch, Brittney Lavery, Jennifer Sherman, Kenneth Sherman, Kyle Sherman, Patrick Sherman, Andrew Sherman, and Isabella Sherman; and four great-grandchildren: David Zloch, McKenzie Lavery, Emersyn Lavery, and Hazel Lavery.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2022, at Cunningham Turch Funeral Home, 811 Cameron Street, Alexandria, VA, followed by burial services at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 S. Kings Highway, Alexandria, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
