Thomas J. Dunnigan 89 a retired Foreign Service officer, died of natural causes June 7 at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital.Having become a Foreign Service officer in 1946, he served in Berlin during the Soviet blockade of the city and the Allied airlift of 1948-49. Subsequent assignments took him to London, Manila, Hong Kong, The Hague, Copenhagen and Tel Aviv. He served 9 years in the State Department and accompanied Secretaries Dulles, Herter and Rusk on overseas trips. Prior to retirement he served as Deputy U. S. Permanent Representative to the OAS. Tom was a graduate of the National War College. He was a native Ohioan, a graduate of John Carroll University, and received a Master?s degree from GW University. He served in the Army in Europe during WWII. After retirement from the Foreign Service in 1984 he served for 8 years with Defense Management Systems, traveling to various posts. He was a member of the American Foreign Service Association; Diplomatic and Consular Officer, Retired; the Mount Vernon Country Club and Good Shepherd Catholic Church.He married his first wife, Rae Marie Fox of Cleveland Heights, OH in 1949. She died in 1990. In 1992, he married Peg D?Agostino of Alexandria, VA. She died in 2006. Survivors include 4 children: John R. Dunnigan of Dallas, TX; Ralph and Leo Dunnigan of Mason, OH; and Claudia Conway of Woodbridge, VA. Another son Michael died in 1997. Also 3 step-children: L. James D?Agostino of McLean, VA; David D?Agostino of Falls Church, VA; and Anne Shingler of Alexandria, VA; 4 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter and 1 step-great-grandson. Visitation: Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Alexandria, VA, Thursday, June 10, 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, June 11, 11am, also at Good Shepherd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
