Tom Holzer died May 19, 2023. Tom was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 8, 1954. He grew up in Bexley, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in engineering. He began working at Wright Patterson Air Force Base while still in school. He spent many years in the Simulator Special Project Office (SPO) working on the development of air craft simulators for flight training supporting several international programs.
In the 1980’s, Tom joined the Defense Mapping Agency which became the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA). He earned a doctor of science degree from George Washington University in engineering management. After graduation, he began teaching. He continued teaching after retiring from NGA. He participated in doctoral advising and enjoyed working with his George Washington University colleagues and students tremendously.
Tom was passionate about photography. Family, friends and classmates will remember him acting as photographer at many events. Photography also fit in well with his love of travel. Favorite trips included bicycle tours in New Zealand and Nova Scotia, small boat voyages in South America and Antarctica and a train ride across Australia. The train ride inspired a trip in a camper van traveling from South to North Australia and across to Western Australia. The trip was so enjoyable he bought a RV and used it to travel in the US. Tom was accompanied on these trips by his devoted wife. They have been together 30 plus years.
Tom loved animals especially his dogs, Chuck, Lily and Jules and a loaner rabbit Honeysuckle. Tom, Donna and the dogs shared many walks and quiet times at home. While not able to travel this spring, Tom enjoyed sitting in the garden, where he had built walls, seating areas and pathways. He enjoyed watching the birds this spring.
He was predeceased by his mother, Florence Luper Holzer and his father, Charles Holzer. He is survived by his wife, Donna Thurnherr, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Tom was a devoted son, uncle, and cousin trying never to miss a family event. He will be deeply missed by all, especially his wife. Family and friends will miss his kindness and friendship.
