Virginia Ayers of Alexandria, everyone’s 92 year young Grandma and wife of the late Robert W. Ayers, passed away on July 14, 2014. She is survived by her two children: Robert R. Ayers Elizabeth of Burke and Jennifer Ayers Jones Mark of Alexandria, and four wonderful grandchildren who adored her, Michael W. Ayers, Cynthia M. Ayers, Melissa L. Ayers of Burke, and Andrew S. “AJ” Jones of Alexandria. Virginia spent her childhood in Suffolk County, Virginia, moving to Alexandria after graduating from high school. She began working at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria on the precision assembly line. She quickly met the man who would become the love of her life. Virginia was a high school athlete apparently a terror on the basketball court, who bowled into her 80’s, once winning the Gold Medal in bowling at the Senior Olympics. Her home was filled with love and affection, laughter, and scrumptious food and baked goods. Her beloved husband once described her as the sweetest and kindest person he had ever known. No one she ever met would tell you differently.
